Randi Miranda - recent grad

Randi Julian Miranda

Master of Environment

With his Master of Environment (with Distinction) in hand, Randi is set to return to his home country of Indonesia to develop his agriculture-based social enterprise Handep Haruei. Randi was awarded the Student Engagement Grant to implement a community project in Indonesia – an opportunity which allowed him to put his sustainable development studies into action and take on issues within the community.

Randi started Handep Haruei just 6 months ago, and he calls it the “manifestation of my professional and learning experience at Melbourne University”. Handep Haruei works to strengthen local agriculture and create added value for Kalimantan forest-based produce. This in turn will enhance local food security, re-value and preserve forests, and support economic development.

With this very exciting option on the one hand, Randi also has also been offered a managerial opportunity with Fairventures Worldwide, for one of their projects in Central Kalimantan, Randi’s home province.

These opportunities would not be possible without studying at Melbourne University.

Randi encourages current students to look beyond the classroom. “University is where you meet people who might be your lifelong friends, your future colleagues or employers”, he says. “Where you might find the meaning and love of your life and re-define your life goals”.

Randi urges students to “excel in your field of expertise; connect with others; and if you cannot get a job or do not want to work as an employee... create a new one for yourself, and others.”
