UTR6.72b - Memorial Awards from the 1920 Appeal

Recital-

  1. In July 1920, the University launched an appeal, through an advertisement in "The Argus", seeking donations to its general funds for the purpose of endowing the teaching and equipment of the University.
  2. In 1923 Regulation No.XLIX was enacted to govern the administration of the Appeal Fund. It provided, inter alia, that in order to perpetuate the memory of the donors of large sums to the Appeal Fund, the University has established commemorative exhibitions and scholarships bearing their names.
  3. In May 1996 the original regulation was revoked and in July 1996 Regulation R6.72B was made to govern these exhibitions and scholarships.
  4. The manner in which the gifts were donated indicated that no trusts attached to the donations.
  5. The University wishes to continue to commemorate the names of the donors or the name of the donor's nominee by listing the awards in the schedule to this regulation.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The condition of each award is set out in the schedule and, unless specified otherwise, must be awarded by the Council on the recommendation of the relevant faculties.
  2. Subject to the conditions referred to in section 1, the following provisions apply-
  1. The Academic Board has power where necessary to prescribe dates for entry of candidates, to appoint examiners and to decide questions of eligibility with respect to any award listed in the schedule.
  2. The awards listed in the schedule may be awarded only to a person who has been placed in the class list for the subject and who-
    • has not previously received the award
    • has not previously competed for the award
    • is enrolled in a course for a degree or diploma, and
    • if a course is divided into Years, has
      1. completed or received credit for the previous Year
      2. fulfilled in one year all the requirements for the relevant Year
      3. completed in the year of competition all the subjects of the Year
      4. not been awarded in any subject of the Year a supplementary assessment otherwise than under section 6 of Statute 12.4 or its subsequent enactment.
  3. If no student or applicant is considered worthy of the award, the award is not to be made.
  4. If a subject is common to two or more courses, only one award is to be made for that subject.
  5. If only one award can be made for any course or subject, the award is to be made only to one student.
  1. The minimum value of each award is that listed in the schedule but this sum may be increased by the Council on the recommendation of the relevant faculties.

4 THE JOHN MACFARLAND EXHIBITION

Awarded to the student with the highest mark in a first-year subject in the discipline of pure mathematics as determined from time to time by the dean of the faculty of Science, following consultation with the head of the department of Mathematics and Statistics.

11 THE WALTER AND ELIZA HALL EXHIBITION

Awarded to the student enrolled in the course for the degree Doctor of Medicine with the highest aggregate mark in the subject Foundations of Biomedical Science. The dean of the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is authorised to make this award on behalf of the University.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the manager, Postgraduate Scholarships, Melbourne Scholarships Office to a student known as the Fred Knight Research Scholar who is enrolled in the course for a higher degree by research.
