Mission & Objectives

MISSION

To represent the interests of the graduates of The University of Melbourne to the Council, and on relevant decision-making bodies of the University.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To undertake the role of advocate for graduates in the formulation and review of University policy and in its administration and management, ensuring that graduates' views and concerns are given due weight
    1. Devise methods to systematically ascertain a wide range of graduates' views.
    2. Increase interaction with Council.
    3. Develop active participation on University bodies, especially key policy committees.
  2. To discuss and debate issues and concerns affecting theUniversity and its graduates, and to make suggestions to the Council regarding such concerns.
    1. Explore current issues and concerns through inviting appropriate members of the University community as speakers to the Committee.
    2. Provide for discussion of identified issues and concerns at meetings.
    3. Promote strategies that enhance the reputation and status of the University and its degrees .
    4. Regularly report such proceedings to Council.
  3. To provide frank comment and constructive suggestions on legislation, and any other matters referred to it by the Council.
    1. Obtain adequate notice of legislation and other documents to be considered.
    2. Obtain full and early information on the policy background and underlying purposes of material referred or likely to be referred by Council.
    3. Encourage expression of all points of view within the Committee.
  4. To promote amongst graduates a better knowledge of the Committee of Convocation's aims, activities and achievements.
    1. Investigate and make effective use of the University's communications media to keep graduates informed.
    2. Develop and maintain close co-operation with the alumni groups.
    3. Investigate opportunities for substantial involvement in, and promotion at, University functions and special events.
    4. Promote and create a high profile for the Annual General Meeting of Convocation.
    5. Provide a comprehensive Annual Report of Committee activities and ensure its wide distribution.
    6. Include in the Annual Report an evaluation of the Committee's performance against its objectives.
    7. Develop and utilise other forms of reporting beyond the traditional Annual Report.
    8. Promote the Committee of Convocation to undergraduates and graduands.
