Ada Mary A’Becket Award

Donor: Ada Mary A’Beckett was a demonstrator and assistant lecturer in biology at the University of Melbourne from 1901. In later years she taught at schools, continued to work at the University and was closely involved in the kindergarten movement. Friends and colleagues of Ada Mary A’Beckett established the award to commemorate the outstanding contribution to the Institute of Early Childhood Development of Mrs A’Beckett, president of the Free Kindergarten Union when in 1921 it purchased the site on which the Department of Early Childhood Studies, Faculty of Education subsequently stood. The Faculty moved to the Parkville campus in 1997.
Eligibility: Students enrolled in the final year of Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
Selection Criteria: Awarded annually to a student who has achieved distinction in some aspect of the course such as overall performance in theoretical and practical elements, performance in a particular component or aspect of study activity provided that preference will be given to a student whose performance is considered likely to enhance his or her teaching capabilities and the quality of his or her work with young children. The award is made by the Council on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Education.

Eligibility: The Associate Dean (Teacher Education) will write to eligible students. Candidates must be one of the top students in the 4th year of the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education in the year prior to receiving the award, and must have secured employment in a community-based pre-school or childcare centre in the year following completion of the course. Candidates must also submit a paper on their Early Childhood Philosophy.
Selection criteria: Assessment based on aggregate results for practicum undertaken in early childhood services (not including primary school), throughout the course. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate ongoing employment in a community-based pre-school/childcare service in the year following course completion. Performance in a written paper on their Early Childhood Philosophy will also be taken into account.

This prize is made possible by Sue Lopez Atkinson, in memory of her late cousin Mrs Wilma Ella Dimsey. This prize commemorates Mrs Dimseys financial contributions to medical research and health and her contributions to charitable institutions both as a volunteer and a financial benefactor. The award recognises excellence in the study of equity and inclusive approaches to Early Childhood education as demonstrated by academic assessment.
Eligibility: Students entering their fourth year of BECE or BECS Pathways as a full-time student.
Selection Criteria: In considering applications, the Manager (Academic Services) Faculty of Education (or other nominated senior member/s of early childhood teaching staff), will consider the applicant's aggregate marks in the following subjects.
For BECE students: Adapting the Curriculum 3B (472-311), Professional Roles and Relationships  (472-303), Social and Emotional Development (472-301), Teaching and Professional Practice 3A (460-308) and Teaching and Professional Practice 3B (460-309)

Donor:
Public subscription moneys were raised from the pupils, colleagues and friends of the late Fredrick John Gladman to establish and maintain the awarding of prizes at Melbourne Teachers' College (now amalgamated with the University and called the Faculty of Education). Fredrick John Gladman BA BSc, formerly Principal of the Central Training Institute of Victoria, died in 1884 after making an important contribution to the improvement of teacher education in Victoria by promoting the ‘new scientific approach to education' — child development and learning — as essential to education and his insistence that development of intellectual and teaching abilities in teacher training programs.
