| Thesis | John Smyth Award R6.72(126) Donor: The funds for this award were collected at the memorial service to the late John Smyth, Principal of Melbourne Teacher Training College from 1902 to 1927 and first Professor of Education in the University from 1919 until his death in 1927 in which dual role he in 1923 initiated the first degree in education in Australia. Eligibility: Doctor of Education candidates Selection Criteria: Most meritorious research thesis in the Doctor of Education. |

| Graduate Research Degrees in Education | John and Eric Smyth Travelling Scholarship Donor: The John and Eric Smyth Travelling Scholarship was made possible by a bequest to the University from Professor John Smyth (pronounced ‘Smith’), who died in 1928. In his will he bequeathed funds for a travelling scholarship or scholarships in his name and in the name of his second son Eric, a medical student, who at the age of twenty two years died as a result of a domestic accident. Eligibility: The criteria for meeting this award, and further information. Special conditions: Application-based. |

Freda Cohen Prize R6.64 Donor: Brigadier H. E. Cohen presented the University with the sum of £1,500 to form the endowment of the Freda Cohen Prize. Eligibility: Master of Education candidates. Selection Criteria: Awarded to the candidate who submits the most meritorious research thesis for assessment for the degree of Master of Education during the preceding year. The examiners of the prize are those appointed to examine theses presented in the year of the award for assessment for the degree of Master of Education. The examiners must consult together concerning the award of the prize, and in a division of opinion the view of the majority of the examiners prevails |

John and Elizabeth Robertson Prize R6.72(71) Donor: Mrs Harriet Hall McIndoe donated a prize for a Faculty of Education student. On her death in 1987 Mrs McIndoe bequeathed to the University a further sum to augment the fund. Eligibility: Student who submits a research essay in the Master of Education (Coursework) in the preceding year. Selection Criteria: Awarded by the Dean on recommendation of the Associate Dean to the student who submits the most meritorious research essay. Special condition: The prize must not be awarded to any person more than once. |
