  1. Membership

President of the Academic Board
Vice-President of the Academic Board or the Deputy Vice-President of the Academic Board
Provost or Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching, Learning and Equity), or nominee
Vice-Principal and Academic Registrar (or nominee)
Chair of the Teaching and Learning Quality Assurance Committee (when not the President of the Academic Board) or nominee
Nominee of the Research Higher Degrees Committee
Chair of the Undergraduate Programs Committee, or nominee
Six members of the Board elected by the Academic Board for a term of three years; two members to retire each year
Three members of the academic staff not being members of the Academic Board, elected by the Academic Board for a term of three years; one member to retire each year
A Faculty or Graduate School Manager nominated by the President, Academic Board
President of UMPA, or nominee
Two postgraduate students nominated by the President of UMPA
Up to four members of the Academic Board appointed as members of the Committee by the President of the Academic Board for a term of up to two years in order to take into account matters such as the balance of membership by discipline
Up to two additional women members, not being members of the Academic Board, nominated for a term of up to two years by the President of the Academic Board

  1. Chairperson

The Committee shall be chaired by a person appointed by the Academic Board. A Deputy Chairperson shall also be appointed by the Academic Board, in consultation with the Chairperson.

  1. Terms of Reference

3.1 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee, on its own initiative or on referral from the Board, in consultation with the Undergraduate Programs Committee, shall develop policies relating to all graduate and postgraduate coursework courses (i.e. courses in which the research component is less than 66%), including teaching and learning practices, for approval by the Board, taking into account national and international best practice in order to ensure that academic programs are of the highest quality and standards

3.2 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall regularly monitor compliance with the policies referred to in 3.1 and, where appropriate, shall make recommendations to the Academic Board

3.3 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee, on its own initiative or on referral from the Board, in consultation with the Undergraduate Programs Committee, shall determine criteria to be used by faculties in the development of proposals for new courses.

3.4 In accordance with principles developed by the Committee, the Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall review and make recommendations with regard to graduate and postgraduate coursework courses on all proposals for new courses and major course changes. In considering course proposals the Committee shall take into account the procedures set out in the Board's Guidelines for the Submission of Course Changes and Statute 5.4.

3.5 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee, in exercising its responsibility shall liaise with all relevant committees. It shall liaise with the Undergraduate Programs Committee on matters relating to alternative Honours and Masters pathways to research higher degrees, and with the Research Higher Degrees Committee in respect of all coursework in research higher degrees and the research component of postgraduate coursework degrees.

3.6 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall be responsible for monitoring delegations to faculties and graduate schools to ensure that they are regularly reviewing the appropriateness of existing graduate and postgraduate coursework courses and the delegated responsibility for approving minor course changes.

3.7 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall advise the Board on proposals for the suspension of graduate and postgraduate subjects, which require approval by Council under Statute 5.4.14.

3.8 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall monitor non-award courses at postgraduate level offered under the name of the University of Melbourne and, as required, develop policies regarding these programs for approval by the Academic Board.

3.9 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee shall make recommendations on proposals for student awards for graduate and postgraduate courses.

3.10 The Postgraduate Coursework Programs Committee may from time to time make recommendations to amend these terms of reference or the specification of its delegated authorities or to provide for the regulation of its own procedures
