Graduate Research Scholarships Committee

1.         Membership

Membership of the Committee is to be determined by the Research Higher Degrees Committee on the advice of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Graduate Research.

2.         Chairperson

Academic Board must appoint a person to chair the Committee for a period of up to two years. A person so appointed will be eligible for re-appointment. Academic Board must also appoint a Deputy Chairperson, in consultation with the Chairperson.

3.         Quorum

A quorum for the committee is 3 or 20% of the current membership, whichever is greater.

4.         Terms of Reference

4.1 To advise and make recommendations to the Academic Board through the Research Higher Degrees Committee on any matters of policy relating to graduate research scholarships and awards.

4.2   To consider applications for all graduate research scholarships and all other awards which form part of the Melbourne Scholarships Program.

4.3 To advise the PVC, Graduate Research, on all matters relating to the award and administration of graduate research scholarships.

4.4  To select applicants on behalf of the University of Melbourne for the award of graduate research scholarships, in accordance with the policies of the University.

4.5 All decisions of the Committee shall be reported to the Research Higher Degrees Committee.

4.6  The Chairperson of the Committee is authorised to approve on behalf of the Committee applications for graduate research scholarships and awards, including related matters such as leave of absence and overseas study, late commencement of a scholarship, referring to the Committee those cases that create precedents or which do not clearly meet current guidelines.

4.7  The Chairperson is authorised to act on behalf of the Committee where an urgent matter relating to an individual’s candidature is concerned.

4.8   All decisions of the Chairperson shall be reported to the Committee.

5.         Appeals

All appeals against Committee recommendations should be referred to the Academic Secretary.

6.         Reporting

The Committee will report to the research Higher Degrees Committee after each meeting.

7.         Secretariat

The Academic Secretary, or nominee, will provide secretariat support to the committee.
