CWIS Campus Wide Information System. The University's Intranet
FTP File Transfer Protocol
Intranet A small netowrk of computers within an organization, used mainly for the passing of relevant information
ISP Internet Service Provider. A commercial organization which exists to allow individuals to connect to the Internet. Note that the University is not an ISP; the only people allowed to access the Internet through the University are staff and students of the University.
ITC Information Technology Centre. Based at 800 Swanston St, this building contains laboratories for training and student use

LAN Local Area Network
PPP Point-to-point Protocol
The Internet A very large network of computers, spread around the world. Not to be confused with WWW or email; the Internet is the underlying structure which allows email and web pages to be transmitted around the world
VRN Victorian Regional Network. Connects the University to the Internet
WINTEL Computers based on Intel 80486, Pentium or earlier processors in that line (or similar processors from other manufacturers), running Microsoft Windows system software
