Overview of the Program
As outlined on the National Library of Australia’s PADI website (http://www.nla.gov.au/padi/topics/92.html) there are a number of accepted strategies to take when participating in a web archiving solution. These options can include ‘whole of domain’, ‘selective’, ‘thematic’ or ‘deposit’.
The University of Melbourne has chosen to take a combination approach and is mixing a ‘whole of domain’ approach with a ‘selective’ approach component. The ‘whole of domain’ approach involves the “collection of Web sites and online resources using harvesters to automatically retrieve material in broad sweeps of the institutions Web space” (sourced definition from http://www.nla.gov.au/padi/topics/92.html ) on a quarterly basis. Whereas, the ‘selective’ approach enables more focus on particular pages that may (in the University’s case) require a greater frequency of capture, a single ‘one off’ type capture or some other special requirement that cannot be accommodated with the ‘whole of domain’ approach.
The ‘whole of domain’ quarterly captures aim to provide a record of the University’s ‘web presence’ as at the 1 Jan, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October each calendar year. It should be noted that these captures only provide a record of what was on the University website at the time of the quarterly captures. The quarterly captures do not provide specific evidence of how many times a page may have been updated in between the quarterly captures, nor will they be able to record any content changes that may have taken place in between the quarterly captures. Some pages (like the University’s front page) have been identified (due to a combination of risk management and records management issues) as being required to be captured on a more frequent basis.
The University’s Enterprise Classification Scheme (ECS) is used to help identify pages that may need to be required captured on a more frequent basis. Please follow the relevant links, for further details about the ECS and the Collection Criteria. Both the ‘whole of domain’ and ‘selective’ captures are done via a third party service agreement.
