Description

Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and Tamie Fraser at Cooinda in the Kakadu National Park during an official visit in 1982.

Kakadu National Park was declared in April 1979. At the time, Malcolm Fraser stated:

It will become one of the world's great national parks. Its environment is unique and precious. Aborigines have occupied the area for thousands of years… The Act under which the park has been set up makes sure that the traditional Aboriginal land owners are fully consulted in their management of the park. (Radio electorate talk, 8 April 1979, M1229)
