Work Experience/Off Campus Electives
Generally, students are not insured under the University's (self-insured) Workers Compensation (Victorian based) scheme, or alternatively, under an outside (host) organisation's “Work-Cover” protection, unless they are engaged in paid employment and are deemed to be an "employee", in accordance with the Accident Compensation Act (1985) Vic.
Explicit advice should therefore be sought from the University’s Human Resources division, to determine whether, in a particular set of circumstances, a person:
- can be classified as a University of Melbourne employee ( for what period of time, duties and conditions, etc,) and if so,
- whether the person is subsequently entitled to the University’s “Work-Cover” protection.
Students are covered by the University's Personal Accident, Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance policies whilst they are participating in, and travelling directly to, or from, relevant and authorised Work Experience / Field / Outside Placements, provided that their “activity” complies with the conditions listed below.
This cover is provided on the basis that their particular “activity” constitutes:
- a compulsory component of their University of Melbourne course or
- a programme organised by “Careers & Employment” and/ or
- the Melbourne Law School “Mentor Program” and Faculty Managed Internships, or
- the “Leadership, Involvement and Volunteer Experience Unit”, including
- the Student Work Placements, “Career Mentor Connection” (CMC), or
- the “UoM Community Volunteer Program” (CVP) or
- the “Student Ambassador Leadership Program” (SALP) Students or
- the Knowledge Transfer and Partnerships Office (KTPO) and the Dreamlarge Knowledge Transfer Grants Scheme (DKTSG) or
- a programme organized by the Graduate Careers Centre of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce e.g. internship, placements, mentoring activities, or
- a course related activity that is approved by appropriate staff, for example, a Student Centre Manager, Course Coordinator or Associate Dean.
Students can only be covered by the University’s insurance policies if their Work Experience / Field / Outside Placement activity is undertaken with the knowledge and consent of the University.
