The University of Melbourne has a rich and fascinating past. Every building, every department, and every period of time has its own story. Some have been told over and over, while many remain unwritten. In order to encourage work on aspects of the history of the institution, the History of the University Unit has been established within the Department of History.
The unit is preparing an extensive bibliography to assist researchers, and has established a register of people working on all aspects of history of the University. Many projects are currently underway, dealing with histories of specific faculties and departments, of buildings and design of the grounds, and the administration of the University as a whole.
Some of these research projects are featured in the 2000 programme of occasional seminars.
The Unit is also responsible for producing a number of publications relating to varied aspects of the University's history.
