3.1. Appropriate use of the University of Melbourne network

(i) Staff and students of the University are entitled to use the University's computing and network facilities for legitimate University purposes only.

(ii) The University forbids the use of its computer and network facilities for a purpose which constitutes an infringement of copyright.

No material is to be placed on a web page without the written permission of the copyright owner. Pictures or videos of people are not to be put on a web page without their permission. Every person should have their privacy respected, which includes the right to restrict the use of their image, home telephone numbers and personal addresses.

You should assume materials on the web are copyright unless a disclaimer or waiver is explicitly stated. If you want to include material from another web page in one of your web pages, link to it rather than copying it.

(iii) The University forbids the use of its computer and network facilities for any purpose which is unlawful.

(iv) You are not permitted to run a private business, whether for profit or not-for-profit, on the University of Melbourne network, or to publish a journal or magazine not authorised by the University.

(v) The University's name, logo or trademark may not be used to imply the endorsement by the University of other organisations or their products or services without the written permission of the Vice-Chancellor (or delegate).

3.2. Third Party electronic publishing

(i) Use of and access to University computing and network facilities is restricted to legitimate University purposes. For students this generally means academic coursework and research as approved by the relevant head of department. Access for staff will depend on the nature of their work, whether for teaching, research or administrative purposes or, for example, in approved community extension activities.

(ii) Third party electronic publishing must not be undertaken by any staff or student of the University on University facilities on behalf of a third party.

Any requests for direct electronic publishing on behalf of a third party should only be considered under exceptional circumstances and should, in the first instance, be referred to the Vice-Principal (Information).

3.3. Disclaimer and Copyright information

Each page in categories 1, 2 and 3 must contain a link to the standard University of Melbourne Disclaimer and Copyright information (http://www.unimelb.edu.au/disclaimer/). This link is inserted automatically as part of the footer. Pages in category 3, which do not use the automatic footer, will need to insert this link manually.

3.4. Penalties for infringement

The University regards adherence to these conditions as vital in order to avoid breaches of the law and to maintain University regulations. Disciplinary or legal action will be taken where the conditions stated in this document have been infringed.
