The University recognises four different categories of pages:
University Central Pages are all pages providing information of general application about the University, such as contact directories, administration pages, special events pages, library pages and student services pages.
No page in this category may have a link to a page which is blank or states that it is not yet ready (or under construction). All links must connect to a valid page containing current information.
These pages must comply with the guidelines set out in this document. Responsibility for ensuring compliance rests with the Communications Unit and ITS.

Faculties and their departments may adapt the design style for their own use. These pages must, however, comply with guidelines set out in this document. (See Sections 4 and 5.). A suggested table of contents is also included for these pages.
Responsibility for ensuring compliance rests with the individual Faculties and the Communications Unit.

Research/Teaching pages include lecture notes, assignment information, research findings and other pages directly involved with teaching and specific research projects. Relevant Faculty or departmental pages must link to these pages. There will be no links to these pages from the main University Homepages.
Research/Teaching pages are not required to include the standard University header and footer, although their use is strongly encouraged (especially on Homepages). Authorisation protocols (see Section 4.1 Authorisation), however, must still be included on every page. Compliance with all other guidelines is expected.
Responsibility for ensuring compliance rests with the individual Faculties and departments.

This category refers to pages set up by individual staff members or students of the University. Their purpose is to present information which is relevant to the author's activities in the University. Personal Pages do not reflect the views, policies or opinions of the University. Personal Pages are governed by the following guidelines:
(i) Personal Pages may be set up by any member of staff or student who has permission to use University facilities for such purposes. The granting of permission to set up web pages is the responsibility of the Head of Department who is responsible for the server on which the page is to be published.
(ii) The relevant WWW server administrator should maintain an index of Personal Pages.
(iii) In publishing a Personal Page on the University network, the author must ensure that the rules of the University are observed and that the laws of the State of Victoria and the Commonwealth of Australia are obeyed.
(iv) Personal Pages must contain the following information:
A disclaimer stating that: 'This page, its contents and style, are the responsibility of the author and do not represent the views, policies or opinions of The University of Melbourne'.
The name of the person who is the author of the page or the name of the person who has been granted the permission to publish the page.
The name of the person who is the author of the page or the name of the person who has been granted the permission to publish the page.
The date of last updating the page.
All Personal Pages must contain a pointer to a departmental Homepage.
(v) A Personal Page must not display an official image, graphic, logo or trademark of The University of Melbourne. Nor can the official University templates or style be used.
(vi) Due to the extensive nature of web material being made available, it is the policy of this University for authors to be responsible for the contents of their web pages. Any Personal Page not adhering to the above standards may be removed.
