Bachelor of Science

Science and technology are not only major drivers of social change and economic growth but are fundamental to solving some of the greatest challenges facing modern society. Energy, water, health and ageing, a productive and sustainable environment, new materials, communication, information access and security, and protection from threats of disease, pests, crime or terrorism are all matters that require the commitment of individuals who have a fundamental understanding of scientific principles.

The Melbourne Bachelor of Science is a three-year full-time degree that provides a foundational knowledge of the sciences and technology to equip graduates to engage in scientific investigation and contribute to debate on scientific issues. A balance of discipline focus and curriculum breadth provides graduates with a scientific basis for understanding the natural and constructed world.

The degree is also the first step in the development of a career in professional science, engineering or health practice, which can be pursued through further study.

The Melbourne Bachelor of Science student has opportunities to contribute to the process of discovery through interaction with world-class research groups and international research leaders. Complementary studies outside the core area of science and involvement in extracurricular community projects provide an education that augments scientific insight with a broader understanding of the role of science in modern society.

Graduates have a broad knowledge of science across a range of fields, with a higher level of understanding in one or more of the scientific, technological or engineering systems disciplines. They have an appreciation of the historical background and evolution of scientific concepts and technological innovation. Their knowledge, skills and attitudes enable them to adapt to scientific, technological and social change and they have a sense of intellectual curiosity and a desire for lifelong learning.
