Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music at Melbourne offers intensive preprofessional music training, including one-to-one tuition in vocal
and instrumental performance and composition, a wide variety of ensemble and performance opportunities, and cutting-edge, focussed studies in aural studies, music history, music language, compositional craft and music technology.

The Melbourne Bachelor of Music enables students to design a course structure appropriate to their vocational aspirations in music. Students also take subjects from other disciplines, providing a broad educational foundation for employment or future study. Students are encouraged to spend a semester studying abroad in their third year,or to take a subject that involves a placement in the music industry or music community.

The new degree structure allows students the option of an exit point after three years. Many students proceed into a fourth year of intensive and specialised music-only study in music performance, music composition, musicology or ethnomusicology to graduate with the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours. Many other students proceed into newly designed professional coursework Masters degrees in music.

Students are also able to graduate with the Bachelor of Music and another bachelor degree taken sequentially with credit for one year of study from the Bachelor of Music. They may also take other diplomas such as the Diploma of Modern Languages concurrently with the Bachelor of Music.
