From 9-13 August 2010 the University of Melbourne will celebrate Diversity Week with a lively program of events organised by staff and students. This important event celebrates the rich diversity within the University community and promotes the inclusivity of all staff and students at Melbourne.

An International Food Festival and competition will be held at Creswick Campus to celebrate Diversity Week in conjunction with the Centenary Celebrations of Forestry Education. Students will be in traditional dress and recipes of dishes available.

Get Diversified with Salsa on South Lawn and the Queer Picnic!
Come and join us on South Lawn to kick-start Diversity Week. This is a collaborative event to promote the diversity of students on campus including those from international backgrounds, Spanish & Latin American cultures, and the Queer Department. Enjoy free salsa dance classes, Latin American food, a queer picnic, and a chance to meet people from all around the world. Proudly presented by the Queer Department, the LIVE Unit & SALP.

Seminar: "Dialogue and Mutual Understanding as Pathways to Global Business"
A seminar presented by the Graduate School of Business & Economics. Hear from a panel of experts about global expansion, the importance of cultural sensitivity in global business, and keys to overcoming obstacles when managing multi-national staff or when managing staff across the globe. Refugee Photography Exhibition of images taken by clients from the Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre and students from Janet Clarke Hall & Panel discussion on how to look beyond the media portrayal & political propaganda of refugee & asylum seeker issues! Panelists:

"Yarn Strong Sista" Indigenous storytelling and face painting Yarn Strong Sista will present a workshop on Aboriginal Victoria for the kindergarten children at the Queensberry Children’s Centre. Featuring discussion about the Aboriginal flag, face painting with ochre paint, story telling, and learning a song in a local Indigenous language (For children enrolled at the centre.)

Kathleen Maltzahn (Greens Candidate Richmond) has had a distinguished career representing disempowered people in our community. The Trial: A Discussion about Australia’s Anti-Terrorism Laws
The LIVE Unit invites you to participate in a discussion about the human rights documentary The Trial, a film about Australia’s largest terrorism trial in 2008. The film follows the lawyers defending the suspects, and shows the effect the terror laws have had on Australia’s freedom of speech. Guest speakers include director of The Trial Joan Robinson, defence barrister Greg Barns, and Brian Walters, prominent Melbourne barrister and human rights advocate.

Knitting Race
Contestants will be tasked with knitting or crocheting a square (20 by 20 stitches) that will be sown together into a blanket. Contestants who can knit the most squares within 40 minutes will be awarded a prize. The finished blanket symbolises how difficult it can be to live in a place where manufactured goods are not readily available. All work made in this workshop will go towards charity.
