Requesting Permission to use Copyright Material from External Organisations

The University of Melbourne Copyright Office provides a service to seek permission on your behalf to use material for official University of Melbourne enterprises. This might include using material as part of a course of study, for use in University of Melbourne publications such as the Cultural Collections Diary, for use on a University of Melbourne web page, etc. Unfortunately, we are unable to seek permission for student and staff research publications and other activites such as conference papers, for individual uses, student events, etc.

Seeking permission from external organisations can take between 4 and 6 weeks to complete. It is important to keep this in mind when asking the Copyright Office for assistance. The time depends heavily on the accuracy and completeness of the information you provide us when you submit the online form. The more information you provide us, the easier it is for us to action the request promptly. If we have to conduct additional research to identify and locate the copyright owner this will add to the handling time of your request. If you have a very tight deadline for seeking the permission, please contact the Copyright Office to discuss your permission request. Additionally, although all atempts are made to contact the copyright owner and receive permission, we cannot guarantee that permission can and will be granted by the copyright owner.

If you are unsure if the Copyright Office can assist you or you would like to discuss a permission request, please contact us.

If you need to seek permission yourself, please follow the information on the Permissions page.

If you believe that the Copyright Office can assist you with your permission request, please fill out this online form.
