The University of Melbourne Library has a long history of support by friends since George McArthur gave his outstanding collection to the University over 100 years ago. This was the Library's first major bequest.

Since then, the Library has received many gifts, including works from collectors' own libraries and bequests or donations which have allowed it to acquire many outstanding publications.

The day-to-day work of the Library and its collections are financed through the University's normal funding. Each year sees the addition of more than 40,000 volumes. These largely represent the current scholarly output of publishers from all over the world. The Library regularly acquires material in 17 languages.

Despite the regular expenditure on the collections of over eleven million dollars a year, the Library still needs the active support of Friends to help it buy items of special importance.

Without the support of the Friends of the Baillieu Library, rare books are increasingly beyond the Library's means. The value of the work of the Friends is amply demonstrated by their help in acquiring many notable works.
