University of Melbourne Collections Managed by Museum Victoria

Two of the University's cultural collections are on long-term loan to Museum Victoria.

Donald Thomson Collection

Donald Thomson (1901-70) was a highly regarded anthropologist who held the post of Professor of Anthropology at the University of Melbourne 1964-68, as well as having a long-standing association with the University as a Research Fellow and Associate Professor. He undertook major expeditions to Cape York Peninsula, Arnhem Land and Central Australia, where he collected Aboriginal artefacts, as well as zoological specimens and information, and made an extensive photographic record of the indigenous people's lives and cultures. http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections-research/our-collections/indigenous-cultures/donald-thomson/

Godfrey Howitt Entomology Collection

Godfrey Howitt (1800-73), physician and natural scientist, emigrated to Melbourne from England in 1839-40. His official roles in the colony included serving on the Council of the University of Melbourne and on the Medical School Committee.  He was recognised as a botanist and entomologist, and bequeathed to the University £1,000 for scholarships in botany, geology and zoology, his books on botany and entomology (see http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/collections/special/collections/rarebooks/howitt.html) and his entomological collection which the University placed on loan with Museum Victoria.
