Lectopia

Lectopia is the new name for iLecture. The brand is owned by the University of Western Australia and licensed for use at the University of Melbourne. All iLecture theatres will now be called iMedia theatres. Lectopia is a process whereby a lecture presentation and accompanying PowerPoint slides are recorded and made available on the web. The PowerPoint slides are transformed into jpg images so that they can be made available more readily. It is also possible to include images, audio and films in Lectopia. However, any material included in Lectopia is subject to copyright.

In most cases, the lecturer will be the copyright owner of the lecture and any accompanying PowerPoint slides or lecture notes and there are no copyright restrictions on these being recorded for Lectopia. However, if the lecturer has included any third party copyright material (where they are not the copyright owner) such as a song, a movie, an image or a literary work then restrictions apply to whether or not it can be included in Lectopia. The Copyright Act permits these materials to be played or performed in a class or lecture for educational purposes but they cannot always be recorded.

There are also different restrictions on the use of copyright material depending on whether or not the lecture is being given for educational purposes (e.g. as part of a class or course) or for non-educational purposes, such as a conference for the general public.

The information below refers to lectures given for educational purposes. For non-educational purposes, see Conferences.

Sound Recordings

Under the Music Licence, if the sound recording is a musical work that is covered by the Music Licence then it can be recorded as long as the conditions and requirements of the Music Licence are met. For more information refer to the The Music Licence in Brief . Sound Recordings that are not covered by the Music Licence cannot be recorded and included in Lectopia without permission from the copyright owner. See also Using Sound Recordings for Educational Purposes

Films, DVDs and Videos

If you are showing a film, DVD or video as part of a lecture and the recording has been taken from free to air TV, radio or pay TV, it can be recorded as part of Lectopia under the terms of our licence with Screenrights. Otherwise, the recording of the lecture must be stopped during the time a video, film or DVD from another source is being shown. Showing it during a class is allowed, but the University has no licence to record it. To do so as part of Lectopia would be an infringement of copyright law and penalties may apply, unless permission has been given by the copyright owner. For more information, see Using Films for Educational Purposes

PowerPoint Presentations and Other Lecture Notes

Lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations can be included in Lectopia if you or the University are the copyright owners. If the lecture notes or PowerPoint includes any third party copyright material, for example artistic works such images, photographs or diagrams etc., these may only be included in the Lectopia recording if they compile with the conditions and limits of reproducing and communicating copyright material for educational purposes. See Using PowerPoint for Educational Purposes for more information.
