Creating Course Packs
Staff can reproduce material to be included in course packs for students, although limits and conditions apply. Material that can be included in course packs are (click on the link for more information about the conditions & limits):
- Journal or newspaper articles
- Chapters or extracts from books or plays
- Essays, short stories, poems etc
- Sheet or notated music
- Web pages
- Images such as photographs, paintings, diagrams, figures, graphs, etc.
There are no limits on the number of copies that you can make e.g. if there are 400 students in the course, you can make 400 copies, plus spares.
You must prepare a cover for the materials which includes:
- the name of the department;
- the subject name and number;
- a description of the purpose for which the materials are made (e.g. Tutorial Readings, Semester 2, 2007), and
- a statement in relation to copyright in the following form and size should appear on the front cover:
THIS COMPILATION OF STUDENT READING MATERIAL HAS BEEN MADE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF PART VB OF THE COPYRIGHT ACT FOR THE TEACHING PURPOSES OF THE UNIVERSITY.
FOR USE ONLY BY THE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ENROLLED IN THE SUBJECT: [subject name and code]
There should be a contents and acknowledgments page at the beginning of the readings. References should include:
- name of author;
- title;
- ISBN (if known);
- publisher (if known);
- number of pages copied, and
- number of copies made.
You can charge for your course pack, so long as its for cost recovery only. It is preferable that such material is sold through the Melbourne University Bookshop. It is also recommended that the material included in the course pack is made available to students without charge in another form, e.g. on reserve in a library.
