Why must I participate in the survey?

The short answer is because it is a legal obiligation. The longer answer is that the survey is part of the University's obiligations under the Part VA statutory licence. The Part VA licence allows us to radio and TV broadcasts for teaching purposes, rather than having to seek permission for each program we might use. Every 3-5 years, the University is surveyed by Screenrights to collect information on material that is being used for teaching under the Part VA licence. This information then allows Screenrightsto distribute royalties to creators.

What will I have to do?

The survey is completed online and for most of you will literally takes less than a minute. Once a fortnight during ths survey period - 13 May-23 June 2013 - you will receive an email asking you to declare if you have made or communicated online any copies of television or radio broadcasts. If you have, you are asked to provide a few simple details. If you haven't, you simply answer no and log out.

But I didn't copy anything from TV or radio, do I still have to do it?

Yes. Even if you didn't copy anything during the survey, it still important that you complete the survey because you provide Screenrights with useful data that will enable them to better distribute royalties.

What is a Copyright Survey Coordinator?

Copyright Survey Coordinators (CSC) will be nominated for each department participating in survey. The CSC acts as the departmental liaison with the Copyright Office. They are also the local expert and can brief other staff in their department on monitoring requirements and procedures. The CSC will also undertake some administrative tasks relating to the survey.
