The Rhodes Scholarships: information for Victorian applicants

The Rhodes Trust offers 9 Rhodes Scholarships in Australia each year, one for each state and three for Australia at large.

A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. All fees are paid by the Trust direct to the college. In addition, a Rhodes Scholar receives a personal stipend and assistance with travelling expenses to the United Kingdom.

Applications for the Victorian Rhodes Scholarship are invited from those who have passed their 18th. birthday but not reached their 25th birthday by 1 October in the year of application.

After applications have been received, the Selection Committee members will review each application. The Committee will meet in mid October, to prepare a short list of 8-10 candidates to be interviewed. Candidates must be available for all interviews on the given dates. Final interviews will be held in October. At the end of the interview process, the Committee will select the Victorian Rhodes Scholar and, if one or two runners-up are thought to be of sufficient merit, they will be nominated to go to Canberra to be interviewed by the Australia at Large Committee. The Canberra selections will be held late November to early December, 2011.

The Selection Committee is chaired by His Excellency, the Governor of Victoria, The Honourable Alex Chernov, AO, QC. There are six other members, each of whom holds office for four years. Members are: Mr. T Orton (Deputy Chair), Professor P Pierce, Ms. S Davies, Mr. A Wyatt, Ms. D Nicholson and Ms. H Carmody.

Closing date for 2012 Scholarships for Victoria: 5.00 p.m. on Thursday 1 September 2011.
