THE REDMOND BARRY 1854 FELLOWSHIP - Guidelines for Applicants

Aims of the Fellowship Program

The principal aims of the Redmond Barry 1854 Fellowship program are to

1. Commemorate the life of Sir Redmond Barry (1813-1880), his influence on the social, cultural and intellectual life of Victoria and the legacy of this contribution to major public institutions including the University of Melbourne, the Supreme Court Library, the Public Library, the National Gallery and the Museum;

2. Promote the State Library of Victoria and its support for scholarly activity and research;

3. Support research and writing that would benefit from an intense period of activity and focus in Melbourne;

4. Encourage scholarly use of the general collections and specialist resources of the State Library of Victoria and the University of Melbourne

Eligibilty

Applications are invited from scholars and writers from Australia and overseas who can demonstrate that their research and publication program will be assisted by intensive use of the collections of the State Library of Victoria and the University of Melbourne. Fellowships are open to the citizens of any country. This award is not intended to support the research program of students currently enrolled in tertiary studies.

Terms and Conditions

Up to AUS$20,000 shall be awarded to assist with travel, living and research expenses.

Fellows will be based at the State Library of Victoria for three to six months.

Fellows will be provided with a furnished office and a generous photocopying and research materials allowance.

2005 Fellows will be expected to

  • Commence their Fellowship during the 2005 calendar year Undertake their research and literary work based at the State Library of Victoria
  • Present a lecture or a series of short seminars open to the public, Library and University communities
  • Complete a short report for the University on the conclusion of their Fellowship

Selection

Applications will be considered by a Fellowships Committee convened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Melbourne and comprising representatives of the University of Melbourne, the State Library of Victoria and the wider community.

Fellowships shall be awarded by the Council of the University of Melbourne on the recommendation of this committee.

In considering the applications and referees’ reports, the Committee shall have particular regard to:

  • The track record of the applicant, relative to opportunity
  • The extent to which the applicant’s work is likely to benefit from the sustained period of access to the collections of the State Library of Victoria and University of Melbourne
  • The degree to which an award would advance the aims of the Fellowship Program

3. Application forms together with enclosures must be submitted BY MAIL to the above address by 6 May 2005.

4. Your three Referees’ Reports must also be submitted to the above address (by mail or email) by 6 May 2005.

NOTE: Late applications and/or late Referees’ Reports will not be considered.

If an application is incomplete or contains information that the Committee regards as misleading, it will be excluded from any further consideration at the absolute discretion of the Committee.
