The University recognises that some staff and students will have been personally affected by the traumatic events surrounding the current Victorian bushfires; some will be faced with financial hardship. Below are contacts for services available to staff and students, and some ways in which the University community can help the recovery effort.

Message from the Acting Vice-Chancellor - 13 February 2009
The University of Melbourne community has been deeply moved by the tragic loss of life and devastation in the bushfires that have swept across Victoria. That no one has been untouched is reflected in the generosity and concern with which our community has responded, University-wide, to those affected by the bushfires.
On Tuesday 3 March 2009 at 1.00 pm, students and staff will have an opportunity to come together in a community gathering on the South Lawn to remember those who lost their lives, or those who have lost family and friends, or their homes and communities, and to thank the volunteers of the Country Fire Authority and the State Emergency Service for their dedication in terrible circumstances.
This non-denominational gathering will mark the deep sorrow felt by so many in our community, and express the hope of new life rising from the ashes.
Speakers will include the Chancellor the Hon Mr Justice Chernov along with staff and student representatives. The gathering will include a symbolic gesture binding our community with those facing grief and the challenge of recovery.
I would encourage all members of the University community to attend. A program for the event will be posted as soon as possible on the University’s Bushfire Response website
