Rural Health

Associate Professor Julie Pallant | Rural Health Campus, Shepparton
tel: +61 3 5823 4517 | fax: +61 3 5823 4555 | email | web

Rural health is a growing and multidisciplinary field that incorporates medicine, nursing, allied health, Indigenous and public health. The School of Rural Health is one of the most dynamic and research focused rural health centres in Australia. As a part of research training, the School of Rural Health teaches an intensive second semester graduate CAP subject: Doing Research: An Introduction to Research Methods. This subject aims to be a practical introduction to research so that students develop an understanding of research design and methods as well as the complete research process. The subject begins with an introduction to the paradigms and approaches to research, types of research design and is followed by discussions of students’ projects and research questions.

This subject also introduces a range of techniques involved in data collection and analysis, including both quantitative and qualitative methods. Methodological rigour is crucial to good research so it is important that students develop an ability to think critically about research methods with students required to develop a research proposal as part of the subject. The subject is team-taught so students will be introduced to a range of topics, approaches, and issues surrounding rural health research.

This is a graduate subject, designed for health practitioners who are embarking on research projects. The majority of students in this subject are mature-age students beginning their Masters of Rural Health. This subject is taught intensively over four days in the classroom throughout the semester. It is designed for health practitioners who plan to undertake a research project.

An undergraduate degree is required. It is helpful if participants are undertaking some research so that the subject has a practical application
