Before you apply
- See an overview of study areas/subjects available by faculty, school or course
- Refer to the University Handbook for specific subject information including subject prerequisites and/or corequisites
- Contact the relevant CAP Officer to discuss your options
Most undergraduate subjects and some graduate subjects are available through CAP in Semester 1 and Semester 2. A limited number of subjects are also offered for intensive study over summer. You may choose to take a subject through one of two modes: assessed or non-assessed. The subject content is the same through either mode.
Acceptance into CAP is subject to approval from the relevant faculty or graduate school. The faculty reserves the right to limit the availability of some subjects to those students enrolled in award degrees only.
For high demand subjects, quota restrictions may apply; applicants may need to supply a supporting statement to enhance their selection opportunity.
Assessed mode
- Studies are graded
- Students will receive an official transcript of results
- Students must attend all lectures, tutorials and practical classes, and complete all set assessment tasks, including relevant examinations. Methods of assessment vary, and are outlined in the subject description in the University Handbook. Assessment regulations are listed in the student diary.
Non-assessed mode
- Students attend lectures only
- Students are not assessed and do not receive an academic record
- If students are accepted into an award course at a later date their non-assessed studies will not be credited
- Non-assessed places are awarded by faculties or graduate schools on a discretion
2. Meet subject prerequisites or corequisites and other requirements (if applicable)
Some subjects require students to have a suitable academic background before they can enrol, such as the completion of specific subject prerequisites.
Refer to the University Handbook for further subject information including subject prerequisites and corequisites
Check with the relevant CAP Officer to ensure that you meet the entry requirements.
International applicants
If you are an international applicant, you need to ensure that undertaking CAP study does not violate Australian visa conditions. For instance, a visitor’s visa does not usually allow an enrolment for a study program that is more than three months in length.
This means that during Semesters 1 and 2, visitors may be eligible only for non-assessed CAP studies. Intensive studies in Summer Semester, completed within three months, may be available to visitors on an assessed mode.
International applicants should consult with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) or the University’s International Centre.
Bridging program for overseas-trained professionals
If you are undertaking study on a non-award basis as part of a bridging program you should be enrolled in a Bridging Program course rather than CAP. Seek advice from the relevant faculty or graduate school staff.
Students undertaking approved bridging study for overseas-trained professionals and hold an Assessment Statement may be eligible for FEE-HELP.
Current University of Melbourne degree program students
Current University of Melbourne degree program students (including international students) require their home faculty or graduate school approval before applying for CAP. Please note that credit for CAP study will not be granted towards studies in a student’s current award course. Student visa holders cannot extend the duration of their course as a result of undertaking CAP study.
How to apply
3. Complete the application form and return to the relevant CAP Officer.
If you are applying for subjects in more than one area or discipline, you will need to lodge a separate application for each area or discipline.
Once you have received your offer
