Information Technology (IT) Audit and Who is the IT Auditor?

Information Technology (IT) Audits

With the ever increasing dependence on IT systems for the delivery of administrative functions, teaching, research and communication, it is most important to maintain an effective IT audit function. IT audits are of a technical nature and include the evaluation of controls and procedures in place for all stages of computer system development.

The main objectives of the IT audit unit are as follows:

  • to highlight areas of high risk;
  • to ensure that university computing facilities operate in a controlled and efficient manner;
  • to ensure data held on the university's computing and communication facilities is stored in a secure and controlled manner;
  • to review computer security at the university's computer centre and throughout the university generally;
  • to ensure departments and staff comply with the university's IT policies;
  • ensure these policies are compliant with State and Federal legislation;
  • to review and test the adequacy of controls in the university's major administrative systems;
  • review the design, implementation and testing of planned controls of major changes to administrative systems; and
  • to ensure no areas of duplication exist in procedures and processes.
