October 2009 University of Melbourne US Celebrations

Los Angeles

ALUMNI in California connected – and compared notes on their favourite drops – at a poolside wine tasting event in California on Saturday, 3 October.

As sommelier Thomas Rekasis shared his expert knowledge of Californian and Australian wines, along with some entertaining stories about the wine-makers, guests reminisced about their University of Melbourne days and were given the chance to sample the wines with various cheeses.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (University Affairs), Professor Warren Bebbington, and University of Melbourne US Foundation board member Dr. Ian Cesa hosted this special event at the Viceroy Hotel, providing information on the upcoming fundraising campaign the and role of the Foundation. Though times are financially difficult for many, they provided insight on the importance of continuing to support students through scholarships, and the significant difference small gifts can make to the larger cause.

Following the positive feedback received from guests at this event, the University is keen to continue providing opportunities for alumni in LA to reconnect.  If you have ideas or suggestions regarding timing or potential venues, or would like to get in contact with other alumni, please get in touch with Krista Northup in the University of Melbourne San Francisco office (knorthup@unimelb.edu.au.) Keep watching this space for more information on upcoming events.

New York

RUSSIAN art, literature and food formed an exciting backdrop to an alumni get-together in New York, held at delightfully eccentric Russian restaurant The Firebird on Tuesday, 6 October.

Renowned alumnus Dr Patrick McCaughey, former art critic for The Age and former Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Wadsworth Athenaeum and the Centre for British Art at Yale University, was the guest speaker for the evening.  As the Director for the inaugural Festival of Ideas – a major five day festival on climate and cultural change held at the University of Melbourne in June – he offered a behind-the-scenes look at the Festival and his experiences.

Professor Bebbbington also shared news about US-based alumna Professor Elizabeth Blackburn, who recently became the first Australian woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her groundbreaking work in molecular biology.

Many alumni who attended the event expressed interest in reconnecting with other University of Melbourne alumni living and working in New York. The University hopes to host another event for New York alumni in the near future. Those interested in Christmas drinks or future functions are encouraged to contact Krista Northup in the University of Melbourne’s San Francisco office (knorthup@unimelb.edu.au).
