Queen's Birthday Honours 2008

Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s Queen's Birthday Honours. Recognised for their outstanding work in many fields, a total of 45 University of Melbourne alumni and staff were honoured.

 


AO: Officer of the Order of Australia

Commissioner Malcolm A Hyde, AO, APM - Bachelor Laws (Honours) 1987, MBA 1989

For service to policing and law enforcement as Commissioner of Police in South Australia, particularly through the development of improved service delivery methods to the detection and prevention of illicit drug use and electronic crime.

 

Professor James F Bishop, AO - Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery 1972, Doctor of Medicine 1990, Master of Medicine (Thesis) 1999

For service to medicine, particularly in the field of cancer treatment and research and through the development of innovative policy, improved public awareness and service delivery programs.

 

Dr Ian J. Watt, AO - Bachelor Commerce (Honours)

For service to the community through the development of public policy and administration in the areas of finance and governance, budget and expenditure policy, taxation reform and through contributions to international professional finance organisations.

 

Professor John Ralston, AO - Bachelor of Science (Honours) 1968, Master of Science 1971, Graduate Diploma in Education 1971, Ph.D Science 1978

For service to science and to scientific research, particularly in the field of physical chemistry and minerals processing, to education and to the creation and application of new scientific knowledge to industry.

For service to education through the study of mathematics, particularly in the field of computational mathematics, as an academic, researcher and mentor, and to a range of national and international professional associations.

 

Dr Michael F. Good, AO - Ph.D in Med. Dent and Health Science 1983

For service to medical research, particularly in the fields of infectious disease immunology and vaccine technology, through leadership roles at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and contributions to education.
