Jason Yau

Degree: Bachelor of Commerce (1999)/ Bachelor of Information Systems (1999)

Current Position: Vice President, JPMorgan Private Bank

After more than seven years of consulting for two of the largest business/technology consulting firms in the world, Jason Yau has made the switch to an in-house role. As Vice President of JPMorgan Private Bank in Hong Kong, he shares his story of how he is now "walking the talk" of his industry, and how he got there.

I have completed my double degree in Commerce and Information Systems in 1999. During the time as a double degree student at the Uni, I have equipped myself with necessary techniques in organisation analysis, process re-engineering and information systems. Through my final year industrial project, I've also been given the opportunity to apply and adapt these techniques in commercial setting.

Since my return to Hong Kong, I have been an active participant in alumni activities, and have played a leading role in the Alumni Association of the University of Melbourne, Hong Kong in the last few years (from General Committee, Membership Officer, to Vice President).

I've spent more than 7 years as consultant at two largest business/ technology consulting firms in the world. I enjoyed the broad range of responsibilities that is required in the consultant role in serving different clients, including business planning, IT strategy development, market analysis, product development, process re-engineering, project management, feasibility study etc. At the heart of all these responsibilities is the structured problem solving skills, strategic thinking, and the 'can-do' spirit that I've developed. More importantly, these are the skills that I can leverage, for both work and life, wherever I go. These have become my 'blood'!

After a few years as a consultant, I've made the career switch to in-house role where I can 'walk the talk'. As a Process lead for JPMorgan Private Bank in Asia now, my role is a 'change consultant' to drive process improvement and enhance performance management capability. Instead of consultancy report, I now need to deliver tangible business changes that I've recommended. Life is certainly more challenging in this in-house role as evils always in the implementation details.
The safisfaction of seeing through and feeling the impact of my proposed changes for large corporation has kept me in my current role.

While most students would go for subjects that lead to professional qualification, I believe soft skills, e.g. ability to change, are as important. Understand yourself, develop your interest and always prepare for changes.
