Alumni Profile: Andrew Swee

Andrew Swee

Degree: Engineering 2005

Current Position: Software Engineer - Willowglen Scada Solutions in Singapore.

Andrew Swee is a Singaporean alumni who recently returned home after completing his engineering degree to work for a company that specialises in SCADA software (ie. systems that are used to monitor or to control chemical, physical or transport processes.)

 

What does your work involve?

My work involves designing or modifying existing software applications or modules to cater for my company’s needs based on customers requirements. Along with the requirements, there are the usual R&D tasks required when implementing new hardware or software applications.

What does a standard day at work entail for you?

A standard day would be achieving the set task for a particular project that has been assigned and to also cater for any changes pertaining to completed tasks.

What’s the most difficult decision you have had to make in your career?

To try and “refit” into the Singaporean culture of work and to learn how to work with people from different countries.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

The ability to learn new things as different projects are being brought up and to learn more about the industry that I am in.

What inspires you about your job and life in general?

For work, it would be the knowledge that what I have contributed will be used in the industry and helps the company gain a good reputation. In life it would be the capacity to learn more things that would be beneficial to my future.

What is the most stressful or difficult aspect of your job?

To wake up early in the morning and drag myself out of bed. Doing something that no one in the company knows how to do.

What led you to study at the University of Melbourne?

It was considered to be one of the best Universities in Australia. I mainly chose it for the prestige of being able to study in a University full of culture and tradition.

What are your strongest memories of life in Melbourne while you were studying at University?

The Baillieu Library – a place of study and socialising. The South Lawn and Concrete Lawn for its weekly bazaars.

What do you like to do in your spare time – hobbies etc?

Read, watch TV, swim, golf, hang out with friends and family.

Do you have any advice about life/career after study to pass on to current students?

Enjoy your university life and don't just study day in day out.
