Alumni Profile: Jennifer Batrouney SC

Degree: Commerce/Law (Hons) 1987 Current Position: Senior Counsel, Latham Chambers, Melbourne. Jennifer Batrouney has had a distinguished legal career and is a former President of Australian Women Lawyers, the peak body for women lawyers associations throughout Australia. After growing up in Adelaide, Jennifer studied at the University of Melbourne and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting). She spent her first year at University as a resident in St Hilda's College and thoroughly enjoyed college life. |
After completing her articles at Blake Dawson Waldron in the corporate and commercial division, specialising in taxation and superannuation, Jennifer remained there for a further three years before commencing practice at the Bar.
She was chosen as a Senior Counsel in 2000 (the title of Senior Counsel replaces that of Queen's Counsel). In April 2001 she was appointed a member of the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal where she served until 2003.
Along the way Jennifer took up a teaching position as Senior Tutor in Taxation at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Law, until the demands of her practice left little time for other pursuits.
She practices in the areas of commercial law, taxation, administrative, superannuation and equity law, and has been an accredited Mediator since 1997.
Jennifer encourages lawyers to consider a career at the Victorian Bar. It is a very collegiate profession, which offers a great variety of interesting work. Jennifer has found the Bar to be a very enjoyable and challenging experience.
She has published articles in many well-known journals including the Law Institute Journal and Taxation in Australia. Jennifer is also member of the Law Council of Australia Taxation Committee and Superannuation Lawyers Discussion Group, and was a State Councillor of the Taxation Institute of Australia from 1997 until 2002.
Even with her many professional commitments, Jennifer has found time to get married (1990) and have two sons now aged 10 and 12. Her hobbies include mentoring young lawyers, golf and fly-fishing. She is a “Women of Note” within Guides Victoria and is President of the 2nd-6th Hawthorn Scout Troop. She is a member of Commonwealth Golf Club.
