Greer Allica

Degree: Arts 1966

Current Position: Author and artist

Greer Allica has lived on the Mornington Peninsula for more than a quarter of a century which allows her to be close to nature and pursue her artistic interests.

Having worked as a secondary school teacher and librarian, Greer now devotes her time to writing and painting with exhibitions on the Peninsula and in Melbourne bearing testimony to her skill. Here she tells her story.

I'm a graduate of Melbourne University from 1967 with English and Political Science majors, and a sub-major in Indian studies. My name on my degree was Greer Lloyd but I think I began my degree as Greer Larsson, then changed to Greer Gardner, then Lloyd! I actually attended University from 1963-5 but got married a week after I finished and soon after had my first child.

Balnarring has been my home for the last couple of years but I've lived on the Peninsula for the last 26 years. I have three children and four grandchildren. My interests are still in the arts, personal and spiritual development.

I love to be close to nature, out in my garden, bushwalking or walking along a beach. I belong to a French conversation group which meets weekly, a bushwalking club, the Peninsula Music Society and the Mornington Film Club. I’m a member of Amnesty International and passionate about human rights.

I am the author of four books on meditation and healing, three published by Penguin and one by David Lovell Publishing. Penguin has also published a boxed set of 50 meditation cards with my words and paintings. My Penguin books are translated in six languages and have sold 53,627 to date. Meditation is Powerful was on The Age bestseller list. I’ve also had numerous short stories and poems published by a variety of magazines.

I’ve had many interests and jobs over the years. I’ve studied philosophy, different religions, psychology, mind dynamics, therapeutic and remedial massage, orthobionomy, yoga, reiki, theta healing, and spiritual healing and have completed a course in professional writing and editing. I have a special interest in life skills and self-help, travel and languages.

As for jobs, I’ve been a secondary school teacher, librarian, had a massage and healing business, been a counselor and meditation and yoga teacher; but now I devote my time to writing and painting. I’ve had numerous painting exhibitions and my work is in galleries on the Peninsula and in Melbourne. I also paint and sell greeting cards and affirmation sheets.
