Young Landscape Architects Establish Design Prize
Emily Lin (BLArch 2004) and Jooyeon Sung (BLArch 2004) are landscape architecture graduates with an eye to the future. Both are successful practitioners who have established a prize for the best design in the graduation presentations for the landscape architecture course in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.
After they and their friends graduated in 2003 they realized that there was a gap in recognition for outstanding design among the final-year student body. Being part of a small group of around 20 alumni, Emily and Jooyeong contacted their fellow graduates and gained their commitment to set up a fund to award an annual prize.
Jooyeon herself was recipient of an award – the Tract Consulting Prize for Landscape Design – valued at $1000, and knows how important it is for young urban landscape design professionals to receive recognition by industry in this way. Jooyeon is now working for Sinatra Murphy Pty Ltd, an award-winning firm focusing on public art, landscape design, publication, and working with Indigenous communities on a variety of landscape-based projects. She has been working on a diverse range of projects including the Living Screen and Podium Design for Dock 5 at Victoria Harbour; Light Fountain, an innovative public art project for the top end of Swanston Street; and specially selected residential landscape design projects.
Emily, who now works in Melbourne for Rush Wright Associates, a multi award-winning firm, also understands the importance of encouraging and acknowledging good design among new graduates who are about to launch professional landscape design careers. Emily has been able to demonstrate her skills as a landscape architect in projects which include the Australian Wildlife Centre at Healesville Sanctuary, Monash Caulfield Campus, Epworth Box Hill, Northcote Civic Square, 800 Collins Street, Williamstown High School Masterplan, Dubai Jumeirah Horizon Development, St Kilda Foreshore competition, Yarra Arts Integration Precinct, The Arts Centre Masterplan and the Kew Residential Masterplan.
