University News - Uni Ranks Well
Melbourne has performed consistently well in international and national rankings over the past 12 months. Late last year, the University was listed as No 1 in a ranking of Australia’s universities by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research.
This followed a worldwide ranking at No 22 by The Times Higher Education Supplement, where Melbourne came in ahead of Cornell University, Johns Hopkins, University College London, the University of California Los Angeles and San Diego.
The University also did well in a range of discipline areas, ranking in the top 50 in the world in engineering and IT (22nd), science (30th) and arts and humanities (49th).
Melbourne was ranked the top Australian – and 12th in the world – university in the social sciences, ahead of the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney. In arts and humanities, Melbourne was placed in the top 50 universities – one of only two Australian institutions to achieve this ranking.
Melbourne Business School (MBS) was ranked as the number one Australian business school in 2005 by the highly regarded London Financial Times. The Financial Times ranked MBS 63rd in the world in its annual Business School rankings.
The University also confirmed its position as Australia’s leading research university, topping both the Australian Research Council (ARC) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project grant funding allocated for 2005.
