Outstanding sports results in 2004
A 400-strong team of students competed in the Australian University Games in Perth in late September 2004 as part of the Team Melbourne contingent.
After five days of gruelling competition across 22 sports, Team Melbourne reclaimed the title of Australian University Games Overall Champions for the first time since 1997, with national titles in Cycling, Diving, Mixed Netball, Women’s Tennis and Swimming.
Winning the Australian University Games has capped off a sensational year for Team Melbourne who also won the Southern University Games in Geelong, the Australian University Snow Sports Championship at Mt Buller, and the Australian University Rowing Championship in Tasmania.
Club results in 2004 were also a highlight with the Football Club snaring the Senior and Reserve premierships in the Victorian Amateur Football Association’s A Grade (University Blues) and both D Grade premierships (University Blacks), the Basketball Club winning the Victorian Basketball League’s Premier Championship and the Hockey Club achieving three Grand Final wins.
The Women’s Baseball team also won the Victorian Baseball Association winter pennant.
