Olympic flag presented

The University has been presented with an Olympic flag – a special honour as Olympic flags are rarely given to organisations outside the Olympic movement.

The flag is a gift of the Australian Olympic Committee to recognise the University’s Beaurepaire Centre and running track as a training venue for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

The flag was presented to the University by International Olympic Committee member and 1956 Olympic silver medallist Kevan Gosper (400m).

Mr Gosper recalled that as members of the Melbourne University Athletics Team in the 1950s he and some of his Olympic colleagues gained considerable advantage from being able to train on the University’s ‘red cinders’ running track in their preparation for the 1956 Olympics.

The University’s Director of Sport and Physical Recreation, Mr Mark Lockie, is custodian of the flag which will hang in the Beaurepaire Centre.

He says the University’s contribution to the Melbourne Olympics included many volunteer staff and students like the engineering students who ensured that the Olympic Flame continued to burn throughout the Games.
