Netball club plays for the Prince
University of Melbourne netballers had the royal honour of playing a demonstration game for Prince Charles at the State Netball Hockey Centre during his visit in early 2005.
As reigning Australian University Games Champions, the Melbourne University Netball Club was asked by venue managers to conduct the mixed netball demonstration as part of the Prince’s tour of Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games facilities.
President and Coach of the Melbourne University Netball Club, Fiona Brown spoke with the Prince about netball and University sport before he chatted with the entire group.
“He asked about the Club’s recent successes and was really easy to talk with,” said Fiona. She added that the Club was excited to be chosen from the hundreds of teams across Melbourne – but while it was a great opportunity to meet the heir to the throne, some of the girls were disappointed that Princes William and Harry were not also part of the touring party.
And the result at the end of the game between Melbourne University Blue and Melbourne University White? A draw!
