Chancellor

Melbourne lawyer, Mr Ian Renard (BA 1969, LLB (Hons) 1970, LLM 1972), was installed as the 19th Chancellor of the University in February 2005. He replaces outgoing Chancellor, Ms Fay Marles, who stepped down as Chancellor at the end of 2004.

A Deputy Chancellor since January 2001, Mr Renard was first elected to the University Council in 1994. He is a member of a number of Council committees, and Chair of the Board of the Melbourne Theatre Company. He has taught law and was a research fellow in the Law School, and was with Melbourne law firm Arthur Robinson Hedderwicks for 22 years.

Council Members

New members have recently been appointed to the University Council. Respected Indigenous leader, Mr Paul Briggs, has been appointed to the Council by the Victorian Government which fills six of the 21-member Council positions. Mr Briggs has been a key adviser and supporter of the University’s work in the Goulburn Valley and convenes the Victorian Indigenous Leadership Network.

Professor Aurthur K C Li has been appointed to Council as one of its nominees. Secretary of Education and Manpower in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since 2002, Professor Li was previously Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

VC to head G08

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, has been appointed as the next Chair of the Group of Eight (G08), a grouping of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities. While looking forward to his role, Professor Davis acknowledges that GO 8 universities face a challenge to maintain the high-quality teaching and research environment expected of worldclass universities in the light of recent government decisions. DVC positions

Two new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) positions – DVC (International) and DVC (Innovation and Development) have been established to strengthen the University’s international profile, improve commercialisation outcomes, and renew focus on alumni, fund-raising and community engagement.

Professor Larkins (BSc (Hons) 1963, BEd 1966, MSc 1966, DSc 1987), DVC (Research) for more than 15 years, will take up the position of DVC (International) in 2006.

Dean, Melbourne Business School

Professor John Seybolt, Senior Vice-President and Distinguished Professor of Management at Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management, in Arizona, was appointed Dean of the Melbourne Business School (MBS) in November 2004. Professor Seybolt has over 20 years’ experience at business schools in the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Dean, Faculty of Education

Professor Field Rickards (BSc (Hons) 1971, PhD 1984) stepped down as President of the University’s Academic Board to become Dean of the Faculty of Education following the retirement of Professor Brian Caldwell. He took up the position in August 2004.

Director, Melbourne Institute

Leading Australian economist Professor John Freebairn has been appointed as the new director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, replacing former high-profile director, Professor Peter Dawkins, who takes on the position of Deputy Secretary of the Victorian Department of Treasury. Professor Freebairn is a respected commentator on economic policy settings, particularly relating to supply and demand of labour.

Nobel economists join University

Two Nobel Laureates in Economic Science joined the Faculty of Economics and Commerce in 2005 as visiting Eminent Scholars.

Professor Sir James Mirrlees and Professor Sir Clive Granger join Nobel Laureates Professor Peter Doherty, and Professor Bert Sakmann who have been Eminent Scholars in the University’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences since 1999.

Professor Mirrlees and Professor Granger will spend at least two months each year over the next three years undertaking teaching and research in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. Professor Mirrlees has also accepted a Visiting Research Fellowship at Trinity College.

Gourlay Visiting Professor of Ethics in Business

Professor Steve Salbu, Director of the McCombs School of Business Ethics Program at the University of Texas, has been appointed as the inaugural Gourlay Visiting Professor of Ethics in Business. The professorship brings an internationally distinguished lecturer to teach ethics in business, both at Trinity College in the University of Melbourne and the Melbourne Business School, for a term each year.

Miegunyah Distinguished Fellows

Six eminent international scholars are visiting the University of Melbourne in 2005 as Miegunyah Distinguished Fellows. Each visiting Fellow presents a public lecture and specialist lectures or a short series of seminars on a topic of general interest to the University.

Professor Michael Taussig, recognised as one of the world’s most prominent cultural anthropologists from Columbia University, visited Melbourne’s School of Anthropology, Geography and Environmental Studies in January 2005.

Professor Azyumardi Azra, Rector of the Islamic University in Jakarta, will visit the Asian Law Centre and MIALS. He is also an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Maresi Nerad, Director of the National Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education at the University of Washington, Seattle will be based in the School of Graduate Studies.

Professor E Tory Higgins from Columbia University and Columbia Business School, will visit the School of Behavioural Science.

Professor Das Sarma from the University of Maryland is a leading condensed matter theorist who will visit the School of Physics.

Professor Michael Walzer, Princeton, will visit the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics.
