Indonesian alumni help flood victims in Central Java

February 2008 -- In response to the severe floods and landslides that hit some areas in East and Central Java at the beginning of 2008, the University of Melbourne Indonesia Alumni Association (UMIAA) is helping those in need.
Members of UMIAA have collected donations to help alleviate the burden of the victims. The funds have been used to distribute food and medical necessities.
The aid distribution was organised by Mr Agus Dwi Priyanto, an alumnus of the University of Melbourne who now works as a lecturer at the University of Sebelas Maret in Solo, Central Java. Mr Priyanto visited some of the most severely affected villages in Solo, such as Desa Sari, Sragen, Karang Pandan and Karanganyar. Besides basic foods such as rice and instant noodles, UMIAA also delivered cooking supplies and sanitary products directly to victims who were staying in shelters and camps.
The floods and several landslides occured after the Bengawan Solo river overflowed following incessant rains. The river flows through the city of Solo, a popular tourist destination due to its royal palace and batik industry, and east through agricultural areas towards Surabaya, Indonesia's second biggest city.
The President of UMIAA, Mr Rapindo Hutagalung, said that this donation program is part of the association's ongoing efforts to make a significant contribution to the social development of Indonesia.

Indonesian alumni give back to the community

November 2007 -- The University of Melbourne Indonesia Alumni Association (UMIAA) has held a gathering to help Bengkulu earthquake victims rebuild their lives. The fundraising event, held at the Le Meridien Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday 31 October, was combined with the inauguration of the association's new executive committee for the period of 2007-2011.
‘We aim to be active in charitable activities as well as the more usual activities for an alumni organisation like us, such as social and educational events,’ said Mr Rapindo Hutagalung, the new President of UMIAA.
The event featured a speech from Ms Felicity Pascoe, Deputy Director of Australian Education International, and the keynote address was delivered by distinguished alumnus Mr Airlangga Hartarto (MMgmt 1997), Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives. Mr Airlangga encouraged alumni to be active on current issues, and commended the care and concern they have shown for their fellow Indonesian citizens through this fundraising initiative.
The night included a delicious multi-course dinner, trivia and games, and concluded with a surprise appearance and performance by popular singer and alumna Ms Fryda Kurniawati (known as Fryda), who completed a Master of Laws at the University of Melbourne in 2000.
Bengkulu, a province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, suffered an earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale at the beginning of the fasting month Ramadan this year. It was recorded as the strongest earthquake in the world that has happened this year. The Association will channel the funds raised at the alumni gathering through the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).
The University has alumni in Indonesia from all walks of life, including past government ministers, members of the House and successful business people.
