FOR UNITED KINGDOM RESIDENTS: The Friends of the University of Melbourne Charitable Trust

The Friends of the University of Melbourne Charitable Trust (Registered Charity Number: 278172) was established as a tax-exempt body in 1999. The Trust is a non-profit corporation managed by a Board of Trustees.

The current Trustees are:
• Ms Joanna Motion, Vice-President International Operations of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)
• Professor Rodney Phillips [MD 1987], Professor of Medicine, Oxford
• Mr Michael Whalley [B.Com, LLB (Honours) 1975], Minter Ellison (London)

The purposes of the Trust are “the advancement and promotion of education and in particular any educational and charitable purposes connected with the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and its past and present students”. The Trust is registered in the Central Register of Charities in the United Kingdom.

The Trust builds on long-established links with alumni and friends, colleagues and partners of the University who are resident in the United Kingdom, and also offers tax effective ways of giving to prospective supporters resident in the United Kingdom. The Trust has already made a number of grants to the University of Melbourne from gifts it had received, providing valuable assistance for Melbourne students via scholarships, libraries, and a range of faculties and research projects. The Trust can also offer tax benefits for planned gifts.

The Trust offers an additional opportunity to maximize the impact of your gift. By donating to the Trust, you enable Gift Aid to be claimed from the UK Government and added to your initial gift amount. This means a minimum of 28% extra will be added to your gift, the combined total of which is available to the Trustees for grants to the University.

FOR UNITED STATES RESIDENTS: The University of Melbourne USA Foundation

The mission of the University of Melbourne USA Foundation is to support educational institutions in Australia and the US. The Foundation has awarded several helpful grants to the University of Melbourne. The Foundation is incorporated in Washington, DC as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Gifts to the Foundation can be claimed as tax deductions by US taxpayers.

In addition to cash gifts, the Foundation can be the beneficiary of gifts of appreciated assets such as stock (stock gifts can be credited at full value and help donors avoid capital gains taxes) and it can arrange with donors to establish charitable remainder trusts. These estate planning instruments can help contributors avoid capital gains taxes, allow for a full charitable deduction, and potentially provide the donor with a life income. The Foundation can also be the beneficiary of a bequest contained in a will.

The University of Melbourne USA Foundation is governed by the following Board of Directors:
• Mr Ian Cesa [BA '83]
• Mr Paul Lewis
• Mr John Schaefer [MBBS '68]
• Dr Bill Sheridan [MBBS '68]
• Mr Joseph Snyder

The Foundation, which seeks gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations in the US, is completely independent from any other US or Australian organization. For more information or to make a gift, please contact:
