Recipient Quotes

Below are three more quotes from recipients of the 2008 Student Appeal Rent Assistance Grants explaining how the $500 grants they received helped them this year…
Please pass on a big thank you to the students who organised the funds for the student appeal. I'm very grateful for their assistance in raising funds, and to the university's financial service for granting my bursary application.
The $500 I received was a great help, as I just manage to scrape together the $1100 rent each month. I work part-time as a teacher and violinist, study music performance full-time, and care for my young child. This bursary gave me some breathing space, to pay the rent without difficulty, and some larger bills, like electricity which is about $400 in winter.
This just made it easier for me to concentrate on the study.
Thanks again for this assistance.
Regards,
K
I am currently in my third year at university and I have always had to work part time to support myself through my course. I find it very hard to maintain study commitments working the hours I do. The money I make from part time work goes towards bills and rent and I feel that I do not have any financial security.
The grant from the Student Appeal enabled me to work less at the start of my semester which helped me get on track and organise my course work. I have received grants such as these during my degree which has helped me enormously. This particular grant enabled me to secure my rent for the first month of my semester which allowed me to work less and focus on my course work. It was great to have the time to do all my reading and really get involved in my subjects. I find that when I do have the time to focus on my studies, I really enjoy my course work and my university experience in general. I was a lot less stressed as I had more time and did not have to worry about my rent.
My grant from the Student Appeal was very helpful and has really improved my university experience.
Kind regards,
S
The cost of rent is high (not to mention food and bills), and with a bit of money from Centrelink and my part-time job it is difficult to make ends meet. I received the grant from Student Appeal at a crucial time – I had been working extra hours to make enough money to pay rent, and I didn’t have enough time to study. I felt like I was always playing catch-up. The grant eased the burden of rent and bills and allowed me to make the time needed for study so I could pass my subjects.
The provision of direct financial assistance made a big difference to my semester outcome. Without it, most of my time would have been taken up by work, and my enrolment at uni wasted.
… thank you for providing such an important service to students.
