University of Melbourne Staff Giving

University staff contribute in so many ways to the life and culture of the University community through the work they do. Another way staff can contribute to students, faculties, research, and the library and cultural collections is through its giving programs, which staff have generously supported since University philanthropy was first established.

2011 University Fund Appeal Priorities

Staff are in a unique position to see the challenges students face everyday. Even when the economy is growing, the issues affecting our students remain the same; the cost of rent continues to increase and students are balancing increased part-time work with study in order to make ends meet.  Increasingly, older students are also juggling responsibilities as parents and carers with their studies.

This is why the priorities for the 2011 University Fund Appeal are focusing on immediate and long term needs:

  • Immediate assistance for students in financial need

    The University's Student Financial Aid program provides grants to students with genuine financial need to help them pay the rent, day-to-day expenses and, importantly, focus on their studies.

    These small grants make a huge difference and can prevent a student abandoning their degree.

  • Long term support for scholarships
    The continued support of the Future Generations Scholarships Fund ensures that scholarships can be made available to students now and in the decades ahead.

    Donors have helped build an endowment to support this fund since 2006 and the scholarships provide students with the opportunity to complete a professionally focused graduate degree.

If all staff gave $5 per week to support these priorities we could provide students with:

  • 140 Financial Aid Housing Grants
  • 125 Postgraduate Grants and;
  • 8 endowed Future Generations Scholarships.

Your support could mean the difference between a student completing or abandoning their studies.
And with each donation, no matter the size, you help to grow the number of students we collectively support, together.

FAQs

Why can’t I give to whatever charity / area I want to?

You can, and you are encouraged to do so!  However for tax-compliance and logistical reasons, the University can only offer payroll deductions for a limited number of dedicated funds.
