Heritage Society explores the big issues with international climate change expert

Climate change and global warming are some of the most pressing issues facing the globe today. Heritage Society members were fortunate to hear first hand about the science behind the issues from Professor David Karoly, a University of Melbourne Federation Fellow in the School of Earth Sciences and international climate change authority, as part of the Society’s 2008 ‘Morning Tea with an Expert’ series.

Professor Karoly’s talk kicks off a new series aimed at inspiring, challenging and informing Heritage Society members about the fascinating breadth of the University’s research, learning and teaching endeavours. Professor Karoly provided a thought-provoking insight into the challenges and opportunities facing Australia as the global climate changes. His presentation prompted many questions from members about the steps they could take to make a difference. Using energy efficient appliances, taking more public transport and turning to green power were just a few of the easy steps Professor Karoly cited as ways to take action to reduce climate change now.

The next Morning Tea with an Expert will be held on Tuesday 13 May. University of Melbourne musicologist and leading Vivaldi expert, Dr Jan Stockigt will give an account of her discovery in Germany in 2003 of a ‘lost’ Vivaldi manuscript. Members and their guests will be treated to a special performance of an aria from this 11 movement piece.
