University of Melbourne health experts lead fight against blinding eye disease
Leading health experts and philanthropists have joined forces in a fight against a curable eye disease causing blindness in Aboriginal communities. The University of Melbourne's Indigenous Eye Health Program aims to eradicate trachoma - an eye disease which is caused by chlamydia which has been wiped out in every developed country except Australia. The program is led by Professor Hugh Taylor AC, a world leader in trachoma research who was earlier this year appointed to the new Harold Mitchell Chair of Indigenous Eye Health at the University of Melbourne. Alumni wins prestigious award for saving village chickens in Ghana
A University of Melbourne alumnus who has helped save village chickens in Ghana, by introducing a vaccine against a serious bird disease, has been honoured with a prestigious award. Veterinarian Dr Stewart Routledge received the Kestevan Medal from the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Perth on Thursday, May 29 for his contributions to veterinary science in developing countries. Dr Routledge persuaded Ghanaian authorities of the need to introduce vaccines against Newcastle Disease, a highly-contagious disease affecting poultry. Following the successful launch of a vaccination program for village chickens in 2006, Dr Routledge has embarked on further projects in Africa and Asia. He is currently based in Dubai, and has spent almost his entire veterinary career working on projects in developing countries. He founded the non-profit Kyeema Foundation in late 2003. The foundation aims to help developing communities help themselves, by establishing activities such as chicken rearing and vaccination, providing assistance to AIDS orphans and research to reduce cyanide toxicity from eating cassava. Dr Routledge graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1973.

Former lecturer heads up World Intellectual Property Organization
A former Melbourne Law School lecturer has been appointed Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Professorial Fellow Francis Gurry was elected to the post by WIPO's 83 core members last month, and will be confirmed in his new role by WIPO's general assembly in September. He joined WIPO in 1985 and has peformed roles such as Assistant Director General and WIPO's Legal Counsel in Geneva. However, among his most notable achievements was his involvement in setting up the agency's internet domain name disputes resolution service. Mr Gurry is the author of Breach of Confidence, an influential textbook on the law of trade secrets and confidential information, and was a senior lecturer within the Melbourne Law School from 1979 to 1984.
Glass now half full: New study shows rocketing acceptance of recycled water
A new University of Melbourne report has revealed that community acceptance of recycled water is rocketing. The report is based on a 2007 Adelaide study completed by Dr Anna Hurlimann, which showed that 58 percent of respondents accepted Class A recycled water for drinking. This means acceptance soared by 54 percent in two years, with a 2005 survey showing only 4 percent of respondents would accept Class A recycled water for drinking. Dr Hurlimann said the aim of the research was to test community attitudes to recyled water use, and how they changed after using it for some time. "Policy makers are increasingly turning to other water alternatives such as desalination, often assuming the public will not be willing to use recycled water," she said. "Such assumptions are often not based on evidence." More>>
