With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games rapidly approaching, Australian athletes are gearing up to confirm their selection and represent their country on the world's largest sporting stage. New alumni networks in France and Cambodia

New alumni networks have been formed for University of Melbourne graduates based in France and Cambodia. France-based alumni who are interested in establishing an informal network are asked to contact Paris-based alumna Andrea Nour (BA/LLB 2000). Alumnus Heang Lak Chear (BCom 2002) is living in Phnom Penh and would like to hear from other alumni in Cambodia interested in social and networking activities for alumni.

 

University to host world's most powerful supercomputer for life science research

The University of Melbourne is set to house the world's most powerful supercomputer for life sciences research, under a $100 million plan to find cures for cancer and other life threatening diseases.
The Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative, launched by the State Government on 18 June, is expected to accelerate ground breaking medical research. The government has pledged $50 million to the project. The University of Melbourne will host the Life Sciences Computation Centre, which will undertake peak computing operations and provide computational biology expertise to other research institutions. Now online - Alumnus Professor Peter Singer speaks on "The Many Demands of Living Ethically"

The man The New Yorker once said “may be the most controversial philosopher alive” drew a crowd of more than 350 people to the first 2008 Vice-Chancellor’s Oration. Alumni and guests showed up in full-force to the Sidney Myer Asia Centre on Thursday, 12 June to hear Professor Peter Singer (BA (Hons) 1968, MA 1969) speak on “The Many Demands of Living Ethically”.  The influential bio-ethicist and author explored the demands and difficulties of living an ethical life, sharing his views on third world poverty, climate change and the treatment of animals.

In a move that will shape the future of its alumni program, the University of Melbourne has launched the Alumni Preferences Survey. Take the survey by 14 July to let us know which services, benefits and opportunities most interest you, and you will go into the draw to win Melbourne Theatre Club tickets, University book shop vouchers or University sports centre membership valued at $300. Research staff in the Faculty of Architecture are interested in getting in touch with JUDY EATHORNE, who studied architecture at the University of Melbourne in 1949. She took some photos of Melbourne Baby Health Centres for her thesis, which are of great value to their project "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds: Designing Everyday Modernism for Australian Communities 1920-1970". Relive your Melbourne experience at Malaysian Annual Dinner

Alumni based in Malaysia are now able to revisit Melbourne, without even crossing water to get there. The University of Melbourne Alumni Association (UMAA) Malaysia is set to host its 2008 Annual Dinner, which will be themed "My Melbourne". The evening will give you the chance to refresh your memorable Melbourne experience. The dinner will be held at iconic Malaysian landmark, The Royal Selangor Club, from 7pm on Saturday 9th August.  More>>

 

Alumni launch innovative art exhibition in Kuala Lumpur and Singaporeart work

Tim Craker (BVSc 1985) and Louise Saxton (PGDip Fine Art 1994) launch their joint exhibition dot-net-dot-au in Singapore and Malaysia in July and August. The exhibition recreates new art works from salvaged and reconstructed materials such as table linen and cutlery, referencing both Eastern and Western decorative and design traditions.

The Deutsch-Australisches Netzwerk e.V. (DeAN) is set to host its 8th European Reunion in Cologne, Germany. Alumni in Europe are invited to join in a range of activities from 12 - 14 September, including a Champagne Reception and Reunion Dinner on Saturday 13 September. More>>
