Study shows link between diabetes and breast cancer

WOMEN at risk of Type 2 diabetes also have a much greater chance of being diagnosed with an advanced breast cancer, new research has found. The University of Melbourne researcher Dr Anne Cust was a key collaborator on an international study that was recently presented to the Population Health 2008 Conference in Brisbane. The study found that women who were overweight or had signs of insulin resistance - such as elevated blood glucose or insulin levels - were about 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced breast cancer tumour. When the blues are calling, pick up your phone

A UNIVERSITY of Melbourne psychology student is investigating whether a new software program that can be used on mobile phones will detect and combat depression in teenagers. PhD student Sylvia Kauer said the software acted as an early intervention system. It asked the phone's user four times a day about their daily activities, moods and if anything stressful had happened. The phone diary could then be used, in consulation with a doctor, to establish how they were feeling and whether further treatment was needed. More>>
