University appoints alumnus Peter McPhee to new leadership role
One of the University's most distinguished alumni, Professor Peter McPhee, has become its inaugural Provost. This role, a first for an Australian university, will integrate the management of academic and student support functions within a single office.
As Provost, Professor McPhee will have a vital role in the introduction of the Melbourne Model - a whole-of-campus student experience - in 2008. more >>

ALUMNI PROFILE: Nehal Bhuta
Degree: Arts 2000, Law (Honours) 2000
Current Position: Assistant Professor of Law, University of Toronto, Canada
Nehal Bhuta is an expert in international criminal and humanitarian law who is best known for his work with the independent non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch. His first-hand studies of human rights, and in particular of justice and reconciliation in Iraq, have achieved worldwide recognition.
After leaving the University of Melbourne, Nehal studied and worked in the USA for several years. Now based in Canada, he has recently been appointed to an academic role in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. more >>

Universities must fight back, says Vice-Chancellor
At the Vice-Chancellor's Oration for Alumni on 19 September, alumni and their guests heard Professor Glyn Davis review the current state of higher education policies and funding levels. With an eye on the coming federal election, Professor Davis advocated a concerted campaign by universities to regain political support.

Artists rise to a sporting challenge
Six alumni are among the finalists in the inaugural Basil Sellers Art Prize for works that engage with sport and sporting culture in Australia. Daniel Crooks, Kate Daw, Mark Hilton, David Jolly, Richard Lewer and Selina Ou are all in the running for $100,000 in prize money. more >>
